The Unknown Facts of Stuart and Edna’s Love Story

This morning Dad told me some of the parts I didn’t know about the story of Stuart and Edna or that apparently didn’t register with me, quite. Entering his “non-retirement,” Stuart had a few hundred thousand dollars. Dad says as much as five hundred thousand dollars, but three or four hundred for sure. He and Edna both had good jobs, no children, and no aspirations to keep up with the Jones’. Their money accumulated along with their cats. Of course, you wouldn’t have known it by the way they lived. When Dad stopped over there once, Stuart offered him a drink of milk. He couldn’t find any clean cups, so Dad drank out of a cream pitcher, and Stuart used a gravy boat.

When the social workers got on Stuart’s case−and they were hot on it−he hired a lawyer to fight them in court, all for the privilege of keeping Edna. When she was away from him, he went every day to check on her. And when he got her back, he spent all the hundreds of thousands of his money to hire help and to supply her medical needs. By the time he died, he was destitute.

So in case that didn’t come out LOUD AND CLEAR in the first post, he loved her something fierce. And she loved him. And it mattered.

When the delicate leaves of love have withered−the words, the smiles and dreams−it is the roots that hold.

So just remember THAT for Valentine’s Day.
