Going through the papers on my desk, I found the copy–folded and crinkled and doodled upon–of the prayer I once prayed in a dedication service. I wondered, when I found it, how I could once have made such huge promises so wholeheartedly. It does not look easy, looking at it now, not easy at all. Still, this is my prayer and still I mean it; I only realize more than ever that it takes an extra measure of the grace of God to actually live it.

Dear Lord,
Today I again dedicate myself to You. I want to know Your will and always walk in it.
Lord, forgive me and cleanse me of every sin in my life. Purge me from all iniquity. Keep me pure and holy so I can serve you and you alone.
I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord.
I’ll do what you want me to do.
I’ll say what you want me to say, dear Lord.
I’ll be what you want me to be.
Lord, fill me with your Spirit. Guide me in every decision I must make in life. Use me, dear Lord, to witness to others and to build your kingdom in our community.
