Deborah, I know I have felt helpless to make a difference at times, too, but I do believe that any little good we do DOES make a difference to others. And it starts with the people closest to us.

It makes me sad that women are in such a terrible place because they have been abused by men and perhaps abandoned by the women in their lives. It makes me angry that our cultural, political and judicial systems are responsible for throwing these women away by putting them in prison. It makes me sad that I still struggle with my own life, knowing I can’t help anyone else until I help myself. Your story makes me feel powerless to change any of it, although I do try to help those who come into my life in whatever way I can. And, your story makes me proud there are people like you and your sister to do the work that I am, as yet, unable to do. The words I might use may be different, but like yours, they come from a deep spiritual belief in kindness, love, and the potential to heal.

I’m so glad God gave you a good first experience of open-hearted listeners.

Keep telling others the stories of God’s work in your life.

I’m blessed with your ways of reaching out to these women behind bars. And I’m blessed to hear how you are sharing with them out of your own experiences….I don’t know your family at all, but from what you write, you are very blessed! =) Stories like yours need to be told, and I’m grateful for you!

I have been mentoring in a women’s prison for years and it still causes me to count my blessings when I hear those gates clang behind me when I leave.
