In Which I Celebrate Autumn with Several Wise Quotes

I’ll be honest. Spring in Oakland disappointed me.

Or should I say it never actually happened. Mid March, we got a quasi-spring that stretched on through mid-May. Warmish weather, greenish grass, barish branches–for months. Meanwhile, my Wisconsin family, after enduring months of cold and a couple of muddy April snows, burst into spring over a weekend. They posted pictures that made me jealous: vibrant grass, trees leafing out, flowers unfolding. The speed and energy were breathtaking.

THAT’S what spring is supposed to be.

Thankfully, Oakland’s autumn did not disappoint. The trees were gorgeous, full color reds and golds and oranges, bright mellow in the sunlight. Ivan and I took a drive during their prime, and even though it was a cloudy day, they still glowed. We took pictures, just for fun. Here are a few of my favorites, with quotes that I hope will inspire you.

Make interesting mistakes. Make amazing mistakes. Make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Leave the world more interesting for your being here.

Neil Gaiman

When you say no, you are only saying no to one option. When you say yes, you are saying no to every other option.

No is a choice. Yes is a responsibility.

James Clear

He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

Ephesians 1:4

Wealth is the power to choose. Financial wealth is the power to choose how to spend money. Social wealth is the power to choose who to hang out with. Time wealth is the power to choose how to spend your day. Mental wealth is the power to choose how to spend your attention.

James Clear

“What’s the best thing you’ve learned about storms?” asked the horse.

“That they make us kinder,” said the boy, “and that they end.”

  1. I really enjoyed these quotes. The scenes in your (new) home area in autumn are gorgeous. And you two are so cute! :) <3

  2. Thanks for sharing the photos. It sure is a pretty place in the fall, but it’s been a very long time since I was there, in the fall or any other time.

  3. Enjoy the beautiful colored leaves for me. We are just now having our second hurricane for this month. That is o.k. this one is moving fast :)
I have 6 family members sick with this COVID thing……two in CA…..3 in PA and 1 AL.
Thankfully none of them needed to go to the hospital. :)
You two look so “happy” :)

    1. Oh wow, a hurricane! Stay safe. Sorry to hear about your family. This COVID thing is really getting around.
