I have never completely forgotten this piece since I first read it in May. And now in August, I came back to find it and read it again. And as I read, the tears slid down my cheeks. I am a mother of young children. I live in a conservative Mennonite world much like yours. I have never before heard anyone say that God is like a mother. In my church, there is a lot of teaching on the responsibilities of fathers as the leaders in the home. When I am in church, I often feel like there is no place at all for mothers there, like being a mother excludes me from the church. But this, this piece you wrote, it rings true to me. Thank you. I am amazed that you could think about this without ever having been a mother yourself.

Such as Is. 66:13 where God is speaking and says, “As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you”. (fathers can comfort to a point, but hurting children want their mama!) My favorite picture is the one of Jesus looking over Jerusalem in Matt. 23:37. How he longed to gather them “As a hen gathers her chicks…….” If that isn’t maternal I don’t know what is.
