Bex and the Big 3-0

Well it finally happened. The big 3-0.

Sunday night my family threw a party for me. There was angel food cake, and black bean salsa, and tapioca, and tea. And family! And presents! It felt like Christmas.

Unfortunately, all the pictures taken were taken on a camera that had no memory card and, apparently, no internal memory.

But last night I took pictures of a special few of the gifts–just for you.

There were the rocks from six-year-old Madison.

I felt privileged to receive these because I know how much she loved them. She brought them to school one day, and spent time examining each one. Notice the black one set on its side–it’s shaped like a heart, as Madison pointed out to me.

My sister Kathy handmade me a card–the very best kind.

Especially when you’re as talented an artist as Kathy.

Kathy also gave me a small turtle which says “Believe.” There it is, perched on my laptop.

Jennie gave me a fishing pole, a throwback to the fishing contest we sisters had going this summer. The winner was supposed to get a pole from the others, but we’re not actually sure whether I caught the biggest fish–a bony jack fish in Deer Lake which I had to throw back–or she did, with her catfish. Unfortunately, neither one of us measured our catch.

I love that the pole is called Shakespeare. A literary pole!

Elizabeth painted a picture for me. She called her painting Bex.

Here I am holding Bex and wearing the pretty teal sweater that Dora gave me.

Why Bex?

Well, it goes back to a conversation we had a couple weeks ago, wherein Liz convinced me that “bex” was a really bad word, probably worse than any I had heard before.

“What does it mean?” I asked.

“I don’t want to say! Look it up.”

“How do you spell it, then?”

She spelled it for me, kind of self-conscious, like someone who is spelling a bad word. “B-E-X.”

I went back to what I was doing, thinking I would look it up afterward. Crazy, how my little sister knew so much more about these things than I did. But I’ve always been sorta naive and clueless.

“Just kidding,” she said. “You mean you actually believed me? It’s a town in Scotland, I think.”

Maybe now that I’m 30, I won’t be so gullible.

  1. Happy birthday! It’s not so bad being 30. ;) I’ll be turning 35 next week, and that makes me feel old!

The Bex word…haha! Trust a little sister to come up with something like that!

  2. Wow!! Happy 30th birthday Lucinda!!! Sitting out in the woods hunting this morning reading your blog gave me a chuckle:-):-)saw a sign once that said , don’t get all wierd about getting older, our age is merely the number of years the world has been enjoying us!! Have a great day!!! Omar Stoltzfus, PA

    1. I really like that thought. Glad you enjoyed the post and thank you for the good wishes! The same to you.

    1. Thank you, Linda! I will treasure the painting–isn’t my sister amazing? She never even took classes. :)

  3. Happy birthday! I had no idea we were so close to the same age. :) I turn 30 in 10 days. Have fun being 30. I’ve heard the 30s are even better than the 20s.

    1. Good to know. Yes, I think I’ve heard that about the 30’s, too–much more drama-free, I was told. That’s neat that we’re so close! I love finding my twins.

  4. Oh, you are still young! I just hit the 4-0. Now that is old.

No, honestly, if my forties are as rich as my thirties, I’ll be wealthy indeed. And I wish the same for you.

And I’m also glad I’m not the only gullible one. I think/hope that I’m not as bad as in my twenties, but maybe I’m just surrounded by people now who don’t take advantage of my gullibleness.

    1. Thank you, Gina. And I’m glad to have a companion in gullibility. We have a special sort of genius, right?

  5. Haha! My brothers used to delight in getting their little sister to believe all sorts of things, which would send me running to mom, which resulted in the nickname of “Hetty” (from Caddie Woodlawn) which I hated ☺ Happy Birthday!! The 30s are a great place to be, she said as she tried to hang on to the last of them…

  6. The big 3-0 is great! =) I turned 30 last year and have had some of the best moments of my life since then! Happy birthday! =)

    1. Thank you, Ruth Anna. I’m glad to hear that, and I hope my year thirty will be just as wonderful. So far, it seems pretty positive, what with a couple of things happening in my life that I’m excited about.

  7. Blessings dear Luci…I am forty you are thirty. I didn’t know this. So when I taught you, you were ten and I was twenty. You are still very talented and I still love your sense of humor. You aren’t too gullible. It is a trait that comes with being humble and a listener and caring. Wear it girl!
