9:00 on a Thursday Night

It is 9 p.m., and my husband is taking a shower.

I recently wrote “my husband” in an email to a friend and she chided me that “if you would use his name instead of that charmingly bridal and proprietorial ‘my husband,’ I could remember it, ahem.”

And so, for you, Sheila, and for any others who may have forgotten, his name is Ivan.

Ivan is taking a shower. Ivan is heading to bed early, as should I, because we will have to get up very early tomorrow to haul a load of hay to a horse farm between Frederick and D.C. I have not ridden with him for a long time and am quite looking forward to it.

What a great way to celebrate Good Friday, by riding with my husband (note, if you will, this second proprietorial usage) to haul hay.

I can’t say much in this post because I have very little time to say it. But I made an unalterable rule that I must always post something Thursdays and, like the law of the Medes and Persians, the rule cannot be changed. I must post something before I join my husband, ahem, in bed.

But I don’t want to share only random thoughts. I want to share something that may be of use to you. So I will tell you what Ivan told me recently that I am trying to remember. “If you say yes to one thing, you’re saying no to something else,” he said.

I never thought of it that way before. I taped a reminder to my laptop base: “Start saying NO more often.” I think the reminder has helped.

  1. Thank you for this. I have said yes to some fabulous new things recently, but it is mixed with the sadness of saying no to other things I hold dear.

What do you think?
